SUNDAY:
After 13 long hours of traveling, I arrived to the Barcelona airport on Sunday morning. A driver picked me up and took me to my homestay. I am living in a small town called “Gracia” with a family of five and three other exchange students. After settling in, my host sisters and I went for a quick walk around the city to see what our new home was like. Barcelona is absolutely beautiful. From the architecture, to the people, Gracia is a precious town. I’ve attached an image of the balcony outside my room that has an amazing view.
MONDAY:
Today was my first day of school at Education First Barcelona. It was so much fun! We had about a 20 minute walk to the school. I met people from so many countries that are also studying abroad. We had to take a short test to be placed in the correct class level and I was put in class 1-2 (the second beginner class). After class, my roommate Madeleine and I grabbed lunch and walked the city. I’m still struggling from jet lag, so after about an hour of walking we went back home and had a chill day. My host mom, Piña, cooked us traditional Spanish flavored chicken, soup, and Spanish pudding. It was actually very very good. After dinner we went to a bar with MyEF (the school) and got free sangrias. There, I made a lot of friends and got to chat with people.
TUESDAY:
I had my first “real” Spanish language class today and whew… it was hard. We’re only allowed to speak in Spanish, so we can’t even translate it to English. A lot of the time we act out what a word means so that it is a bit easier to remember. I really enjoyed my teacher because she was super enthusiastic and helpful. She’s lived in Barcelona her whole life, so she gave me many good recommendations for what to do here. After class I went home and rested… jet lag is a killer! Piña made us chicken croquettes and a pasta/tuna salad. I didn’t even try the tuna salad, but the chicken croquettes were decent. They are one of the most popular tapas here, but the texture didn’t thrill me. After dinner we went to the courtyard next to our house and hung out with some friends.
WEDNESDAY:
I am starting to feel very homesick. When it is 10am here it is 2am in Texas, but I still called my parents and my boyfriend and woke them up because it’s very hard being away from home. Between missing my regular life and the culture shock that I am having here, I’m having quite a difficult time. Even though I am having a lot of fun and love this city, it’ll never be the same as home. I went to the super market to buy things that remind me of home like Oreo’s (oops tehe). The best thing for me to do is to stay busy by going to all my classes (which I LOVE the school here), and hanging out with friends.
THURSDAY:
After class today I went to the beach with some friends. It was about a 40 minute walk from the school, and an hour walk home. The walk was well worth it though. The beach was very crowded but so so beautiful. We got mojitos and sunbathed for several hours. The water was a bit chilly, but felt amazing with the heat. My friends, Sabrin and Nathalie, are from Switzerland and are so fun to go out with. We went on a short bike tour together after the beach. I’m finally getting rid of my jet lag and really settling in here and it is so nice. I feel so relaxed and happy. Even though I miss home, I am so excited to be on this trip of a lifetime.
FRIDAY:
Today I had a late class and since it’s Friday everyone skips. My friend Sterre and I didn’t know this, so we were the only two people in class. It was like a free private lesson! I actually feel like my Spanish is already a lot better just from the one week that I’ve been here. I was able to stop in a shop and have a full conversation with the worker about which purse I should buy, and I felt so accomplished. After school and shopping, my friends and I went to the EF residence to get ready for a night out. We watched the fireworks that are on for the Merce Festival, then went to a small concert in the street. They all ended up going clubbing until 8am, but I went home around 1:30.
SATURDAY:
The Merce Festival is this weekend so the streets are PACKED. I met up with some friends at the residence and we went out for lunch. They were all so exhausted from their crazy night out, so I met up with some other friends at the beach. We spent several hours relaxing at the beach before heading up to the festival. I believe it is a party to mark the end of summer and the beginning of fall. There were concerts all across town, fireworks, flamenco dancing, human pyramids, free drinks, “fire runners”, and so much more. It was such a fun and interesting experience and I’m so happy I happened to be in town for it.
